WHAT IS PARKOUR?
The sport originally termed Art du Deplacement, now also referred to as Parkour or Freerunning, was founded in France in the 1980s by a group of nine men. Parkour derives from the French word Parcours meaning ‘route’ or ‘course’.
Parkour is for those who want to challenge themselves, feel the city under their feet and be amazed at what the focused mind and body can accomplish. To do parkour you have to be fit, disciplined and somewhat fearless. One must overcome obstacles both physically and mentally. It is a philosophy, a sport that is full of adrenaline.
I've met Uygar Alan in Ankara, a member of TeamAvoid, who has been practising Parkour for 5 years. When I asked him why he was doing it he said "you know I've seen people walk 200 meters just to avoid a little puddle of water, which is really funny". These guys train all over Turkey and are devoted to this sport. He says it takes alot of practise, courage and determination but anyone can basically do it.
Some of their training places are the Maltepe Park, Meclis Park, Kızılay and the Ankara Castle.

The Parkour Enthusiast's Requirements...
1) Shoes and some comfortable clothes...
You want a pair that has decent grip and shock absorption - no skating, soccer, or football shoes. The ones you'll be wearing need to be flexible and light; it's less about protection and more about morphing with your foot to the surface. It doesn't have to be a specific brand but Nike's running shoes are recommended. Climbing pants, since they allow you to move freely, and are durable, fit well, and don't get in your way. Gramicci, Prana stretch Zion pants (good), North Face, and Arborwear are recommended. Dickies are also durable and offer free-range of motion. Jeans are not recommended, as they are too stiff and do not allow enough freedom of movement. 2) Find a friend! Not only will your friend help keep you motivated, but they will show you things that did not even occur to you, forcing you to learn. Another choice is a Parkour coach. Someone who has been in the game for a while will be an invaluable resource in shortening your learning curve - and they will help keep you from getting hurt. 3)Find a few places to train! Find some area of the concrete jungle that looks enough like a maze but poses less of a challenge (and danger) than the Great Wall of China. Once you have found one, find another. You will need various obstacles to keep your mind and skills fresh You can start with your local park or go to the Maltepe Park! 4) Get in shape! You are going to be running, jumping, and rolling until the cows come home - so getting your lungs into shape is priority number one. Hit the treadmill, the elliptical, and start swimming and boxing. Concentrate on your muscles, but don't forget to work with your own body weight. You can find a bar and do pull-ups, chest to bars, climb ropes, do squats and push ups. The best training in town is the Crossfit BackStreet in Balgat. 5) Learn the moves, landing first! There is a basic landing that you will be incorporating into all basic drops. The principles of this basic landing will be used for the advanced landing (the Parkour roll) as well. Therefore, it is important you learn and master this technique first. There are four main key points you always want to remember. 1) When you land, your legs will be about shoulder width apart. 2) You must land on the balls of your feet. That way your body will act like a spring and distribute the landing. If you land on your heels, your body will act like a stiff board and will injure the rest of your joints and body. 3) You will not allow your legs to bend below 90 degrees. Bend below 90° and you put too much strain on your knee joints and you slow yourself down. 4) When you have forward momentum, or are taking a higher drop, lean slightly forward and allow your hands to absorb some of the force. This will keep your legs from bending below 90° on the drop and enable you to continue your run. Only use this basic landing for small drops. |
Kick Start My Heart!
Hello,
I'm Barbaros. I'm a Bilkent Theatre graduate, ex-gymnast and a thrill seeker. I cant sit still, always on the move searching for exciting activities that will get my heart pumping. In this blog, I want to share some of these activities you can do in Ankara and hopefully motivate you to get up on your feet!
This is my first post. In this blog I will share exciting activities that people do in Ankara. It will consist of any activity that gets the hearts pumping. It will include parkour, (freerunning, a sport that's becoming popular since 80's in France) theme park rides and other viral physical activities you can do around the city.
Ankara is very limited in terms of terrain and commercial possibilities to adrenaline junkies. For example the nearest skiing complex is in Elmadağ... For people who love nature, extreme sports and dangerous activities, it offers way too little. Nevertheless, it shouldn't stop us from getting the adrenaline we seek.
